The marlins farm system is one of the best in the league whitch is built by Cameron Maybin,Mike Stanton,Sean West,Logan Morrison,Matt Dominguez,Kyle Skipworth,Aaron Thompson,Jon Rainer,Scott Cousins, and Dallas Trahern. If all these players become stars or good players the marlins have alot to look forward to.
The Marlins pitching staff is seen as the teams greatest strength coming into the season. It features the solid young arms of Ricky Nolsasco, Josh Johnson, and Chris volstad. The back of the rotation however is still shaky. But if Anibal Sachez is completely healed from his shoulder surgery and Andrew Miller can live up to his potential the marlins rotation could be the best in the Nl east and compete with anybody in the league. Its possible that someone else can beat out miller and sachez in spring training those canidates would be pitching prospects Sean West and Aaron Thompson.
The Marlins havent made a move since they inked Jay Gibbons to a Minor league deal this offseason. Another move may soon come however the marlins need a veteran backup catcher to help the young pitchers and starting catcher John Baker. The marlins could bring back Ivan Rodriguez who was a part of the 2003 world series squad. They would probably only sign him if he was willing to play for the league minimum. They also have had internal discussions about Outfielder Andruw Jones but they havent spoke with his agent at all yet. Larry beinfest said he is comfortable going into the season with the current roster but I think they will add a catcher at some point in time
The 2009 marlins offseason has not been nearly as big as last years when the fish dealt Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit. This year the marlins started the offseason off by dealing Mike Jacobs to the royals for releiver Leo Nunez who was 4-1 with a 2.98 era and 26 strikeouts they also dealt closer Kevin Gregg to the Cubs for pitching prospect Jose Ceda who is seen as the Marlins future closer. They also dealt Pitcher Scott Olsen and lf Josh Willingham to the nationals for Emilio Bonifacio and 2 prospects. The marlins notable free agent signings for the fish are Releiver Scott Proctor and first baseman/ Corner outfielder Jay Gibbons. Players that they lost to free agency were releivers Joe Nelson,Doug Waechter, and Arthur Rhodes outfielder Luis Gonzalez and Catchers Matt Treanor and Paul Lo Duca.
It is possible that Josh johnson has been out for over a year with tommy john surgery but could start before the all star game
Dan uggla has missed the last 5 games but he should be back soon
